Blessed Benedict Daswa

An Inextinguishable Light of Faith and Courage

Blessed Benedict Daswa, born in 1946 in South Africa, was a prominent figure in the African Catholic community, known for his unwavering courage and devotion. His life story serves as a compelling testament to the power of conviction and persistence in the face of adversity.

Daswa's early years were shaped by the simplicity of rural life, and his pivotal decision to embrace Catholicism significantly influenced the trajectory of his life. Daswa was completely devoted to Christ and the Catholic Church, where he was active in his own way as a leader. At the same time, he had a great deal of influence in village life as well. His faith had been guiding him in both of those roles. As a teacher and community leader, he dedicated himself to both academic pursuits and the comprehensive development of those under his care, leaving a lasting impact on the community.

Indeed, his faith was not merely a passive element but a driving force that led him to confront prevailing superstitions. In a bold move, Daswa publicly opposed the harmful practice of witchcraft, refusing to contribute financially to rituals conflicting with his Christian beliefs. However, Daswa’s principled stand against witchcraft faced growing opposition within the Headman's Council and the village. Despite the dissent, Daswa, influenced by his Christian values, remained resolute. He opposed the harmful practices associated with witchcraft and sought truth directly, rejecting gossip and hearsay.

Jealousy and resentment grew against Daswa due to his success, both in opposing witchcraft and in his personal achievements. Some even spread rumors linking him to witchcraft, driven by envy. As tensions escalated during a period of increased witchcraft-related crimes, certain individuals targeted Benedict, viewing his Catholic faith as a threat to traditional practices. The lightning strikes on houses in the village provided an opportunity to scapegoat Benedict, aligning him with perceived witchcraft activities.

Aware of the mounting pressure and risks, Benedict turned to prayer, seeking support from close friends. Despite the dangers, he maintained his stance against the traditional beliefs associated with lightning strikes. In the final Sunday of his life, Benedict was observed immersed in prayerful reading of his Bible in church, exemplifying his deep spiritual commitment. The consequence of this courageous stance was severe.

In 1990, Daswa faced the ultimate test of his convictions, resulting in his brutal and untimely death at the hands of those who opposed his stand. His steadfastness in the face of adversity underscored the resilience of faith even in the darkest moments.

What then, was responsible for Daswa’s remarkable faith? Daswa found strength in his faith through consistently partaking in the Eucharist, where he received Jesus. This profound expression of faith and love held immense significance for him, serving as the focal point of his existence. He prioritized attending Sunday Mass without fail, unless circumstances made it entirely unfeasible. Simon Khaukanani attested to Daswa’s deep devotion, noting, "Benedict had a profound affection for the Mass and would willingly walk approximately 4 or 5 kilometers to join the Church service at Muramba, Malavuwe."

The Catholic Church acknowledged Daswa's exemplary life by beatifying him in 2015. This recognition symbolizes the tribute to his enduring commitment to Christian values, even at the cost of his life.

Blessed Benedict Daswa's legacy is characterized by selfless courage and unshakeable faith. His story challenges individuals to stand firm in their convictions, offering inspiration for facing formidable challenges. May we draw lessons from his life, embodying the values of courage, service, and unwavering faith in our own lives.
